The closure of good places in Leicester continues apace. The Criterion shut in February after an electrical issue and it seems they are not to re-open. Marked as permanently closed on Google and their FB page is gone.

This place in Sheffield also closed:

One of my very best friends, former nextdoor neighbour and fellow Merton Beer Festival organiser Nick Helfrich has set up a very small micro brewery on Harris (Isle of Harris Brewery) . Craig - you know Nick from seeing him regularly at Cropredy. Anyone who has been to Merton BF before Nick and Anna moved to Harris 5-6 years ago will know Nick as well, forever enthusiastic and optimistic about everything.

I tried some of his trial brews about 18 months ago and with one or two tweeks required they were coming along pretty well. He’s got some of his latest batch to send on to me, but I thought that I would mention them as Nick and Anna are a fabulous couple and I wish them all the best in this venture.

Btw I don’t do Facebook but I know Nick has publicised things on there. I haven’t added yet as waiting for the ok from Nick.

I was looking up details of a new brewery in Chelmsford - Radio City brew Works - and came across this website: http://essexrealale.com/essex-breweries/.

The following breweries have shut:

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/vendetta-brewing/34583/

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/essex-brewery-company/24041/

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/mr-majolicas/22184/

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/round-tower/16301/

And Hope who seem to have not made it on to here prior to closing.

There are also 10 or more new breweries I haven’t cross referenced yet to see if they’re on Ratebeer yet. And details on a couple of breweries which now use another brewery’s kit, etc, so may be of interest to whichever Admin covers Essex.

I was adding this new brewery and pressed enter so it saved before I’d completed all the details:

This lot look to have shut:

Sextown Ltd was shut down in July 2017. Looks like the same people as Magic Spells:

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/sextown-brewery/29086/

Incidentally Magic Spells should be listed as a Contract Brewer, apparently most of their beer is brewed in Cornwall and some in Essex:

Thameside Brewery have moved:

Unit 7

Tim’s Boatyard

Cheers. Just noticed that Magic Spells are described as not revealing their exact location. However their website now mentions a tap and shop at 24 Rigg Approach, Leyton, E10 7QN. May be a separate location of course.

One of my pet hates is when people add breweries as being based in London. Google Maps tells me that this lot are based in Bermondsey:

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/mothership/39298/

This is a small thing, but I’m not sure we should use the website of another database (Whatpub) as the URL link for a pub…

https://www.ratebeer.com/p/champion-of-the-thames-greene-king-cambridge/44068/138581/

At any rate the Champion of the Thames has their own website which is https://thechampionofthethames.com/

Also, Broood at the Prince of Wales in Hinckley is now just the Prince of Wales. Closed for a short time & now under new management. Future not 100% certain as I understand and it doesn’t seem to be the beer pub it was.

This is now called Sheppy’s House of Cider

It’s difficult as the registered address for the company is in London. There is however little/no information on their website about where the beer is physically made.

Fair enough. Only it took me 3 minutes to look it up on Google Maps. So whilst we don’t know where it’s brewed at least we can be more accurate about where they are technically based.

The following Greater London breweries are located as noted (other than where their location is in the name):

Fitzrovia:

Leyton:

Edmonton:

Walworth:

Highbury:

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/green-times-brewing/38078/

Whitechapel

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/intelligentx-brewing-company/28768/

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/kentish-town-brewery/33533/

Bermondsey:

https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/tidal-brew-co/34462/

House have closed - Goodness were using the kit but will soon have their own kit going so pub is considering options.

And I thought all these places were London. Although I’ve never heard of Fritzrovia.
