How has your beer rating changed since Covid-19 arrived?

I know drinking in pubs, clubs and restaurants has had a huge effect on us all in the UK but what about other aspects? I intended to help my local breweries and outlets as much as possible, but I have failed really. Apart from using SophiesBeerStore and a pub doing deliveries close to me I’ve drank beers from all over the world and thought I had left the UK alone: Looking at my stats for the last 12 months makes interesting reading (to me anyway!). Click on your own page to ‘Countires’ and select ‘last 12 months’.

Game of two halves… or three quarters & one quarter I guess. Up to December I was ordering from Europe on almost a weekly basis, tons of Polish, Dutch, Finnish, Russian, Croatian, Hungarian and American beers along with a few UK and foreign beers ordered in UK. From January I’ve ordered about the same amount from UK sites as before but only one order from abroad (plus the ill-fated attempt at getting some Polish beer), so the number of UK beers ordered has stayed similar but as a percentage has rocketed as my forrin beer number has been slashed. Not counted how many beers I’ve had in each quarter but last year I ran out of beer once all year, this year it’s happened a few times already

Last year we also had a three-month travel window in summer which boosted the foreign ticks, waiting to see if we’re grounded this year or priced out by ridiculous testing rules…

I have a pretty massive home bias now.

195 ratings since March 16, 2020 (Down from 883 in 2019, 1271 in 2018. Also reflects a lack of travel…)
189 of those were from Canada.
184 from the province of Ontario.
6 non Canada ratings: England, Belgium x 3, Netherlands, Wales
Of those 6 only 1 was purchased during the pandemic.

I did actually buy a bunch of Belgian beers (Orval, Rochefort, Chimay and Bernardus) but those were not ratings, and reflect an overall increased shift towards “drinking beers” vs “rating beers”. I’m often ordering beers 4-8 cans at a time vs. just singles. I ordered 12-24 cans at once for the first time in decades.

I almost never order a beer that I am pretty sure if I won’t like just to get a tick anymore. (I was heading that way pre-pandemic as well but my wife mabel was still in tick mode so we averaged out a bit lol) Not having group tastings where you can share the misery makes it less appealing for starters.

I haven’t been inside a bar since January or February of 2020. I’d have to check. Been inside one brewery to pick up beer to go. The rest has mostly been deliveries.

My ordering gradually ramped up over 2020.The lull in the summer meant I did my usual Friday lunchtime trip to Elusive brewery a couple of times, but during 2021 my I’ve been ordering about one parcel a week.

Split between:

  1. Ordering beers from my favourite more local breweries (Elusive, Unity, etc).
  2. Picking off new breweries from Berks, Surrey, Hants, London, Dorset, US states, etc.
  3. And random purchases - i.e. a couple of orders from Ghost Whale just because they had some sahti.

And in 2020 more trading than usual in anticipation of Brexit.

Although these figures are skewed by the old Protz 300 ticks I added in August.

Would of rather been out drinking more, and managed to go out fairly frequently to local haunts during last summer but overall been supporting my local breweries over here mostly by mixture of buying direct online, and through local bottle shops. Been getting plenty of US/UK beers as well, and also Netherlands ticks score highly after finding out some of the best webshops in Europe are based there (hello Beerdome) so been including some Netherlands ticks as well in my mixed orders of other country ticks.

UK wise hope can get back soon to visit family and friends and visit some old/new places - been far too long.

It’s been tough. My ratings have plummeted. I really struggle to get 40, sometmes even 30 in a months, where pre-pandemic I was hitting 50-60. I am also spending more on beer overall. I suppose it’s bigger measures combined with delivery costs, but also the beers I’m drinking tend to be of a higher quality. My evening beer is one of those little rituals that’s kept me sane and I’m not keen on supermarket filler.

Beers from 33 countries helped me through the first year of the pandemic, with England unsurprisingly way out in front as normal. I added Romania, Slovenia and Cyprus in 2020.

I went to the pub a few times in the summer but to be honest I was a little nervous - remember Leicester’s numbers in June and July - and it just didn’t feel the same. I hope nobody thinks I’m too indelicate when I say that after more than 5 months I’d give my left nut to have a pint in a pub. Hopefully I won’t have to next week!

Not quite 12 months as only joined last May and obviously cant compare to previous years.

One thing I have noticed is the my percentage of English rates is falling. I’m sure it was around 75% in my first 3 months but just looking at the last 3 months rates this has dropped to 58% and overall now stands at 64%. I can only put this down to Beer52 boxes and cheap rates from lowcostbeer.

I’ve really been focusing on the UK and it shows and I would throw in that between my wife’s trip to Florida/local beer stores trying to downsize US beer supplies I’ve been able to stay up over 100 rates for them in the last 12 months.

I have been ordering a lot more beer on line, Hoptimism, RAD, and HOTM mainly, but also ordered a few times directly from breweries. My country split probably isn’t that different to normal, the reduction in British rates due to a lack of beer festivals partly replaced by British beers ordered online.

Are those just for the year? Where are you pulling those numbers from?

As per my note at the bottom, I added on a load of old ticks in the summer so that inflated the figures by 150-200. That definitely inflated my Belgian figures as it included various lambics, etc. However in anticipation of Brexit I ordered beers from Finland and also did a trade so that explains why I have so many ticks from my Motherland.

Sorry, I meant where did that screenshot come from. Which I realized is explained in the first post of this thread (facepalm)

First and most obviously, I’ve not been able to go to brewpubs and have sampler flights, my preferred way of rating. I can still rate new beers at home and do, of course, but that’s just not as enjoyable. Another change has been that I used to almost never get a growler or howler. I wanted to try a variety of beers, not have 1 or 2 quarts of the same one. But when it’s been the only way I can reasonably try a local beer, and I wanted to keep supporting the local breweries, then growlers and howlers it is.

The ratings effect has been fewer new beers and for obvious reasons a bigger proportion of canned/bottled beers.

Looking at my ratings lately is very misleading. I wasn’t very good about getting my ratings entered here for a long time and I recently cleared out a roughly 300 beer backlog that included pre-pandemic ratings.

That’s the biggest thing that’s slowed me down, serving size. In pubs I buy halves/thirds (no smaller legal measure available, except at all-inclusive fests) and in normal times have regular bottle shares. For 8 of the last 12 months no pubs, and for about 6 of them not allowed to meet people either so no shares, so minimum 330ml of each beer and in most cases 440ml, big difference in both cost and consumption. Net result is for drinking same volume of beer I’m ticking half as many if that

Based on my personal records, comparing 2020 to previous five years:

  • Number of ratings: down 50%.
  • Portion size: increased from approx 225ml to 310ml - due to having 330/500ml packaged beers rather then third/half pint in pub, plus less opportunity to share on accasion.
  • Country of origin: dropped from 89% UK to 68% UK - due to higher chance of non-UK beers in subscription boxes as opposed to at the pub.
  • Number of different styles - down very slightly overall (due to lower number of ratings). However, if I’d had the same number of beers I suspect this would actually have gone up a little as the subscription boxes are more varied than the bitter/gold choice you get in many UK pubs.
  • Number of different countries - down very slightly, however, same applies as per number of styles above.
  • Number of different brewers - roughly halved, in line with reduction in ratings.
  • Most drunk styles: A big change here; my most rated styles of all time are bitter, gold, ESB & mild (in that order). However, over the last twelve months they’ve been IPA, SIPA, NEIPA and bitter - reflecting a tendency for subscription boxes to focus on modern pale ale styles, as opposed to the trad British styles you get in many UK pubs.
  • Average score given - increased from 3.13 to 3.23 (reflecting I think the relative absence of bland golden ales due to the pub closures).

So, yeah, big changes for me which I suspect reflect what’s happened to most people. And to go back to the original question, here’s my country stats for the last 12 months (missing 1 Japan rate I’ve yet to upload):
|England|39|
|Scotland|16|
|Poland|9|
|United States|9|
|Ireland|8|
|Germany|5|
|Croatia|2|
|Estonia|1|
|Japan|1|

Have a slight home bias since covid. Made even worse by the 60 or so Swedish beers in the backlog. No festivals and very few pub visits. Spain does quite well since I did spend a week there last autumn.

Same drop in ratings for me, managed to visit some bars last summer/autumn fortunately. Also managed to attend some local tastings during the winter. Due to the idiot laws here in this country, we can´t order beer from local breweries because they are not allowed to send them via mail, so supporting local breweries is not that easy. (pick up available to some extent). Ordering from webshops abroad is allowed though. :unamused:

Similar situation here in Norway, I have been quite a “home boy” this weird year. I have still managed to get through a few decent British beers, some of them via online shops.
