New Belgium Juicy Haze IPA

so…is this actually just a well hopped Hefeweizen in disguise? Are most NE IPAs? Is there an American Hefeweizen yeast strain? Have you seen this in other beers? I tried it and thought it approximated the style well enough, but want to revisit it again soon.

ABV-7.5%
IBU- 42
Yeast-American Hefeweizen
Hops-Citra, Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe, Nugget
Malts- Pale, Wheat, C-80, Oats

if you want to be cynical, then Schneider Weisse and Brooklyn invented the Haze.

I kinda thought the same about the first few I tried that they’re just hopped up wheat beers. Oats seem to make up the rest of the malt bill? I’ve also seen Conan yeast mentioned a few times in relation to this style. I do quite enjoy the style myself.

I think NB just doesn’t know how to make the style. Nor do most people trying it. I think brewers are too concerned about the appearance and not the actual flavor, which often sucks.

From what I’ve heard, most of the folks around here are using either

So… no… I don’t think using Hef yeast is common at all.
