New York brewery/brewpub advice

Another question:
As beer from New Jersey is one of the last I need to complete all US States, and as a bonus get a few New Jersey place ticks we are planning a small afternoon roundtrip there. Looks easy walkable and the view of the NY skyline should be great from here to.

Plan is to take the ferry to Exchange place,
Then walk to Iron Monkey

Then HopsScotch
https://www.ratebeer.com/Place/state/city/placename/29591.htm

Then Barcade
https://www.ratebeer.com/Place/state/city/placename/20449.htm

Then Departed soles brewing co
https://www.ratebeer.com/Place/state/city/placename/56221.htm
Contacted those og FB/Messenger some weeks back, no reply.

Then Taphaus
https://www.ratebeer.com/Place/state/city/placename/61030.htm

And then head back to the ferry.

Are there better / easier options for New Jersey beer / place ticks when staying in Manhatten and having to use public transportation?

Just for reference, how long time is a metro ride from lower / central Manhatten to south Bronx ?

I’ve been there a couple of times, and they were a promising upstart early in their career, but they kind of stalled a bit. Recently I’ve started seeing a few new beers coming out. But if you want to visit The Bronx, you should definitely visit the Gun Hill Tavern at Mott Haven, which is 15 minutes walk from the subway station. They have great food, besides their beer.

The subway ride from mid Manhattan to Bronx could take anything between 25 to 45 minutes depending on the time of the day. You should use express trains as much as possible of course.

This is the tavern, which is nearer then the brewery itself

Departed Soles is OK. They specialize in Gluten Free beer but make other stuff too. Brix City is also pretty close to New York. I biked there before, but not sure how to do transit. A ferry exists that takes you to Atlantic Highlands where Carton Brewing is at too. Totally different direction.

You can get to Jersey City on the PATH train which is like a subway. That said Carton beer is available in many bars too.

Bars in NYC I meant

Looks like you also need a Louisiana rate beers from the brewery Abita should be very easy to come by in NYC check beer menus and if all else fails you can hit a New Orleans themed restaurant there is a couple I believe.

Abita can be had in most supermarkets and some bodegas. Definitely seen it at Key Foods or Associated.

Thanks for the advise.

Have the Louisiana beer sorted, just havent gotten it yet.
But nother 1 woudnt hurt either, so ill have a look.

The South Dakota beer on the other hand…
But hopefully Trapped will help me out there.

Nice

I really liked https://www.ratebeer.com/p/wet-ticket-brewing-rahway/67316/36509/

Easy train ride but maybe more time than you want

If you visit enough breweries, you’ve got to eat at some point!

Other Half is the best brewery in New York, but you’ve got like IPA and IIPAs and you’ve gotta like noise. It is a short walk from there to Pizza Moto for some truly great pies.

In Queens, look for LIC Beer Project and Singlecut. Both focus on IPAs as well. Singlecut is really big, and has good food on offer as well. Astoria Beer and Cheese has a dozen taps and a hundred or bottles as well a number of cheese based comestibles.

Next to Other Half is Ugly Baby, which is so spicy that it will make you drink half the bar. Highly recommend to anyone who can handle a hefty bit of pepper. I cried (while downing an Other Half four pack at the restaurant).

Thanks for the advise on food places aswell, keep them coming

That Ugly Baby place looks good, but might be to hot for us.

No one’s mentioned Barcade, is that still there? Around 30 arcade machines in an old mechanic’s workshop in Brooklyn with a good selection of around 20 beers on tap. https://www.ratebeer.com/p/barcade-brooklyn/2121/88561/

Can’t really add to what anyone else has said as was last there in 2013, and everything will have changed!

Not only is Barcade still there but there are at least two more locations in the city: St Marks Street and Chelsea.

Spent some time racing around New York.

I’d agree that Brooklyn is definitely worth a trip. Other Half is excellent and not far from the Subway, Torst is really smart and I liked Greenpoint and Interboro. Can get subway between all of them with a little effort or just Uber it.

There’s some great places in the Bowery, Augers Well, Proletariat, Good Beer NYC and Fools Gold. All are pretty close together and had a great range of beers on including a few different Hill Farmsteads. Good Beer is a drink in bottle shop which is cool.

If you are doing some tourist stuff then the High Line is cool, Devil’s Ave brewery is a block or so away and is pretty good.

Otherwise I think all the other venues are covered. Check out my recent 2 or so pages of place ratings if you want some other ideas. Hit a lot of places.

Death Ave, not Devil’s Ave. i found it mediocre and overpriced, but ticks are ticks. There is also Birreria not too far from those. Also there is a Milk and Hops location in Chelsea worth hitting if you are at the Whitney or Highline.

Oh yeah. Sorry. Was multitasking! Milk n Hops is pretty good as well.

All subjective based on your beer likes really. If you like juicy hoppy stuff than you’ll be happiest in Other Half. 20 on. About half were DIPAs, plenty of IPAs then a few odd other styles. $4 taster pours.
