PLACES: Issues Reporting - Please Post Here for modifications

Not sure if admins want to take any action but there’s a very blatant attempt at gaming the system that went on with this place.

https://www.ratebeer.com/p/maison-du-biere/60421/

First 5 reviews all appeared on the same day, all scoring perfect 100, two more followed a few months later. Two of them are from affiliated users which is apparently against guidelines. All the profiles are otherwise empty (no beer ratings or anything else) so most likely aren’t real users.

In my opinion it’s utterly useless having ratings like that on the site, they offer no value to anyone. On the other hand, its the sort of thing that drives me away from their business as a customer, so maybe it has that effect on others too.

Also I’m aware they all have less than 10 rates so it doesn’t count towards their score, but still, the principle of it.

EDIT: Thanks for taking care of this Marko

I raised this for a UK shop and was told that they ask customers to review the place so I should wind my neck in (or words to that effect).

I mean I don’t have a problem with shops asking customers to review their place, I’m sure that’s fairly common anyway and it’s natural to want this. But customers who do so should at least make an effort to give an honest review with some substance.
Giving it a perfect 100 is fine if they truly believe that but with little to no content other than “great shop” or words to that effect it’s pointless. Tell us what’s so great about it then other users will take the review seriously!

The main reason I called out this shop was because all 7 ratings were like that, 5 of which were added on the same day, 2 of which were from affiliated users. All 7 of the reviews came from non-users. It all just seemed so obviously dishonest.

Agreed, that was pathetic. Though I’m sure it’s a very nice place - and I really hope it gets honest reviews from our users, so it gets the coverage it probably deserves!

Yeah that’s the bizarre thing… having had a look on their website and Facebook it appears to be a really nice looking little shop/taproom.

The strange thing is, they have 120 reviews on Facebook (117 are 5 stars) which for a bottleshop that small is crazy, so it’s obvious they asked, which again, I don’t have a problem with. The main difference there is that people are writing what they actually liked about the place, i.e. complimenting the friendly staff, the large selection of drinks, the look and feel of the place etc. Why couldn’t the RB raters do this too? Mind-boggling.

Is there some sort of error with different apostrophes being used for Butcher’s Tears because not all of their beers are appearing in alphabetical order:

The ones at the bottom of the list are using the “fancy” apostrophe, if you look closely a normal apostrophe ' is straight while fancy has a serif (the curly bit). Alphabetically the sans-serif character comes first, hence this sort error.

They one with the serif is what Microsoft Word, iOS, and possibly Android now automatically switch to to make your writing look prettier, probably whoever added those beers copied and pasted from somewhere.
In general these fancy ones shouldn’t really be used in database systems like this, precisely because of sort order errors and sometimes character encoding issues. Ideally joet will have them automatically replaced with a standard ' if people add a beer with it. A similar thing happens with " and

For now, admins will just have to manually edit them.

I’ve always wondered why their beer list was so weird…

The curly quotes are all fixed now.

Epic Brewing - Sugar House: No longer exists, although the restaurant (Dolce Sicilia) at that address still has Epic beers for sale in bottles. There may still be an ownership connection.

@Sledutah - since you’re far more local - do you know more about this whole Epic Brewing Sugar House / Dolce Sicilia thing? What little I can find online gives different stories on it and the Dolce Sicilia site makes no mention of beer (for legal reasons?).

I went to the Epic location on S State St in search of Big Bad Baptist Triple Barrel. They had run out but recommended I try the Sugar House location. The location has no visible markings referring to Epic Brewing. Fortunately I went inside, because they had some bottles of the beer I was searching for available for sale.

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll look into it and make the changes.

Thanks to whomever got rid of it.
Years ago and several ownerships ago, they did serve an awesome squaw bread.

I’ll bet that paired nice with an Epic pale lager.:face_with_raised_eyebrow:
