The Tuesday Stat Attack: 5 The Channel Islands

Yeah, both my Liberation rates failed to clear 3.0 and that was in my first 12 months of rating, when I was a lot more generous.

My averages for Liberation are in the bottom of the last page - 34 rating averaging out at 2.98 and that’s with me been generous with the early ratings. I’ve always thought there beers are passable, but they are really are a very big fish in a tiny pond.
Jersey’s tiny Bliss brewery however perform very well, in my top 30 breweries with a average of 3.52 over the 9 ratings. Def one to look out for especially as they are canning now

While my sampling of Channel Island beer is 1 a piece, it still revealed how small samples can yield high averages. Guernsey ranks third in my country list (see below).

Count Average
Estonia 8 3.75
Norway 29 3.62
Guernsey 1 3.6
Poland 7 3.53
Denmark 32 3.53
Sweden 23 3.52
Spain 8 3.5
Romania 2 3.5
United States 212 3.47
New Zealand 9 3.47

Visited Guernsey for a week in 2014, and Jersey for 2 weeks in 2018. Liked Guernsey best, more peaceful (heavy traffic on Jersey), but the beer and cider selection on Guernsey was not overwhelming.

The Scilly Isles do have a Brewery, Ales of Scilly, but they are included within Cornwall.

Unfortunately I have fallen behind with these, too many Beer Festivals of late to catch up with. I have visited both Jersey and Guernsey, in 2006 for a glorious 10 days, flying out of Coventry airport when you could. I walked the coast of Jersey, really enjoyable and just spent the one day on Guernsey. I was only thinking recently that we should go back one day. On a much sadder note, one of my best friends, Paul, died on Guernsey back in the early 90’s whilst cycling, hence our quick visit to the island to pay tribute to a cracking chap.

I find myself equal 3rd for Jersey with 15 beers, most of these picked up at various Beer Festivals and the odd Wetherspoons. I am equal 4th for Guernsey with just 8 beers. I have had beers from 2 Breweries in Guernsey, Randall’s 7 and White Rock 1, their Wonky Donkey being my favourite Channel Island Beer at 3.5. Just the one Brewery from Jersey and that’s Liberation (in it’s many guises) with Liberation IPA (Cask) being my highest rated beer at 3.4.

Despite visiting many pubs on both islands I only got round to doing 1 review, I didn’t do many back then, and that was the Lamplighters in St. Helier which I gave 66. I must get back to put this oversight to bed.

I have little to add to the Channel Islands … handful of rates and nothing that interests me … however I note that you flew from Bagginton

My only visit to the CI, Jersey 1986 family holiday, was from said airport

Also … my only trip to the IOM was from the very same outer Cov airport

Weird !

We loved flying from there, just down the road for us really and you parked right next to the sheds where you were processed. Just enough space for 1 flight an hour, no hanging around. Really disappointed when it stopped taking passenger flights.

Certainly not places where I excel in terms of stats!

Jersey: 6 ratings - 4 for Liberation, 2 for La Mare. Nothing rated since 2018. Average rating: 3.37.

Guernsey: 4 ratings - 2 for Randalls, 2 for White Rock. Nothing rated since 2019. Average rating: 3.28.

Just the one Guernsey rate for me being that Rocquette cider from my local garden centre. When I got it home and realised I had a new country rate I did a little jig. Very sad, I know.

None for me. I had ex coworker who lived in Jersey for years and would go back once a year or so, he worked out of our Belfast office and I was working on plan for him to bring me back something for my next visit to NIR, but then Covid happend and my position was eliminated. So now no leads on these Channel Islands.

I thought I’d jump ahead to this one!
Jersey - 5 beers (34th)
Guernsey - 1 beer (outside top 50)

We decided to squeeze an extra family holiday in, in case the world decides to end anytime soon. We wanted somewhere a bit warmer than Edinburgh, so we’re heading to Jersey for a week during Easter. I’m told I have a cousin living on Guernsey, so an excuse to visit there on a day trip too.

@Jerseyislandbeer I will make sure I don’t miss out on JB’s Brewhouse and Krafty J’s but if you have any further new developments since your post, I’d be delighted to hear about them. Also anything else from Guernsey?
