Ukraine regions

This may be a bit premature given the troops at the border etc. It’s one of the larger number of breweries in DB though. Obviously the Crimea situation etc. is in flux as well. So this list has 27, including crimea and sevastapol. Thoughts?

Cherkaska oblast,
Chernihivska oblast,
Chernivetska oblast,
Crimea,
Dnipropetrovska Oblast,
Donetska Oblast,
Ivano-Frankivska Oblast,
Kharkivska Oblast,
Khersonska Oblast,
Khmelnytska Oblast,
Kirovohradska Oblast,
Kyiv,
Kyivska Oblast,
Luhanska Oblast,
Lvivska oblast,
Mykolaivska Oblast,
Odeska Oblast,
Poltavska Oblast,
Rivnenska Oblast,
Sevastopol,
Sumska Oblast,
Ternopilska oblast,
Vinnytska Oblast,
Volynska Oblast,
Zakarpatska Oblast,
Zaporizka Oblast,
Zhytomyrska Oblast

Looks good to me, same as the ISO list

We definitely need some agreement on the disputed regions first though. If it carries any weight, their government website considers them part of Ukraine, obviously.

I mentioned in the Russia split thread that we could potentially add disputed regions to both Russia and Ukraine, of course, this is far from ideal. But if for example there was a brewery in Crimea that considered itself Russian we could put it there, likewise if one there considered itself Ukrainian it could go there.
Obviously confusing for users so I’m not going to push for that. Just throwing it out there as a potential solution for if this is an issue.

Tbh those names are a bit weird.

In my opinion, it would be better to use the system we used with the Russian regions, e.g. Moscow Oblast instead of Moskovskaya Oblast (which is a direct transliteration).

So we would have Donetsk Oblast instead of Donetska Oblast and Poltava Oblast instead of Poltavska Oblast.

Also this is what English-language media mainly use (including English-language publications based in Ukraine such as the Kyiv Post). I don’t think I’ve ever read “Kyivska Oblast” or “Donetska Oblast” anywhere.

Anyway, I’ll make a list here a bit later.

Looks good.

Is this list better? (taken from here)

Cherkasy Oblast
Chernihiv Oblast
Chernivtsi Oblast
Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
Donetsk Oblast
Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast
Kharkiv Oblast
Kherson Oblast
Khmelnytskyi Oblast
Kirovohrad Oblast
Autonomous Republic of Crimea
Kyiv City
Kyiv Oblast
Luhansk Oblast
Lviv Oblast
Mykolaiv Oblast
Odessa Oblast
Poltava Oblast
Rivne Oblast
Sevastopol Municipality
Sumy Oblast
Ternopil Oblast
Vinnytsia Oblast
Volyn Oblast
Zakarpattia Oblast
Zaporizhia Oblast
Zhytomyr Oblast

I have objections.
This is a difficult question. If we proceed from the modern rules of transliteration of geographical names, then Kyivska Oblast is the best option, because it sounds like that in Ukrainian, and Kyiv Oblast is an artificial construction.

But no one writes that/speaks like that in English.

And for what’s it’s worth, the “official translation” of Ukraine’s Constitution uses “Kyiv Oblast” etc. (looks like they asked an English-speaker).

**Odessa is the Russia spelling. Although it’s a majority Russian-speaking region I think we should use the Ukrainian spelling.

*** Sevastopol is a city, again I don’t think we need to point this out.

I’m speaking from the perspective of an English-speaker who frequently reads about Ukraine from British and American sources.

And government websites in the former-Soviet region aren’t known for their consistency or quality of translation (and I’m saying that as a professional translator).

For example, one of the sites above uses a completely different approach

Chernihiv Region, and so on.

And I speak from the point of view of a specialist who has studied toponymy and modern rules of translation / transliteration of geographical names. Kyiv Oblast - deprecated, Kyivska Oblast - modern.

@DoctorHU

As one of the few active Ukrainian raters here, how do you this should be done?

Kyivska Oblast or Kyiv Oblast? Zakarpatska Oblast or Zakarpattia Oblast? Anglicised version or transliteration?

I believe we need to settle the Crimea situation before we split Ukraine.
My proposal is:
Crimea (+Sevastopol) is listed separately as a disputed area.
Luhansk ans Donetsk may stay as it is for now.

Need @Oakes and @joet input here.

As a person of Ukrainian descent, Kyiv Oblast sounds weird. I always say Kyivska Oblast, but, then again, I always say it in Ukrainian. I don’t see any reason why not to say Kyivska oblast, but seeing as we we Moscow Oblast instead of Moscovskaya Oblast, I guess there is something to consistency…

Zakarpattia is the region; Zakarpatskya Oblast is the oblast.

You sure? Seems to have two names, see the translation of the country’s constitution above, and also Zakarpattia Oblast - Wikipedia

The thing is that, yeah Київська область and Kyivska oblast sound normal in Ukrainian, but not really in English. And as this site is in English (apart from the reviews, which can be in any language) then it would make more sense to use the anglicised version, in my opinion anyway. I mean, it’s called Odesa Oblast because Odesa (not Odeska) is part of it…

Anyway, I will accept whatever the locals say, regardless of however strange it looks.

I guess it is used pretty interchangeably (at least on the English wikipedia site).

The correct transliteration - Kyivska Oblast and Zakarpatska Oblast.
