Kind reminder about unretiring / renaming / moving places

Hi all!

Since many of you can edit places nowadays, it’s important that all of us, admins and non-admins, follow certain rules so that we don’t accidentally make mistakes that might cause people to lose ratings, or make the site show inaccurate info by old rates not applying to new locations.

If a place has moved - it’s not okay to just change the address and move the pin. The place entry is to be closed (a good practice is to add the quarter or street to the old one’s name) and a new one created. We should only perhaps practice that with places without a physical location, internet stores and such.

If a place closes and a new one opens at the same location (usually takeover and remodeling) - do not just rename/edit the old one, even if it’s “similar”. Retire the old entry if it’s still active and open a new one.

If the place was closed for a while and reopened without real changes (same ownership, concept, name) - only then is it okay to just unretire it

If the place was renamed without changes - it’s okay to just rename it

We just ran into a situation where someone just edited the place name for a venue that had changed hands (+extensive renovation) between breweries, without changing anything else (it was even still linked to the old, closed brewery), and had to edit stuff, move ratings, reset the scores manually etc. It’s just pure luck that people weren’t “rerating it” really, so I felt, since the edit happened fairly recently, that a thread should be made so the info would reach more people.
