This is an occasional stat from the UK forum, that I thought I might pass on now that Belgium has been split into regions.
The rater of the most beers from a region gets 50 points, 2nd 49 points and so on for each person in the top 50. This is repeated for each region, and then totalled. Points are allocated in the order people appear on the top 50 list even if the have rated the same amount of beers as someone else (just keeps it simple).
I was hoping to creep into the top 50 in at least one of the Belgian Provinces, but failed on all fronts. Only 10 or so beers away in three of them, but not likely to make any inroads for a while, what with Covid preventing travel and Brexit messing with web beer ordering.
Hey @reidyboy and @solidfunk, I have been going to Belgium for beery trips since the mid-1990’s (at least twice a year), recording what beers since the early 2000’s and even with 943 different rates I can’t make a single regions top 50!
Should enter my ratings from untappd, i’m sure i would be in top 40 or at least a lot closer to it But manually entering 10s of ratings is very very boring job.
In a similar boat to yourself, my first trip was 2000/01 time, and have probably been 15 or more times since.
Reckon there’s a good 3 or 400 Belgian beers I’ve had pre RB and never caught up on a rate.
I wasn’t expecting to hit top 50 in these lists but I’ll tell you how I did … my last trip to Belgo land just before Xmas 2018 (would certainly have been back last year had it not been for COVID) and I spent two nights in Brussels and did some taprooms of shall we say the less traditional / new brewers … yielding maybe 25 or so rates. Throw in Cantillon from which I’ve rated 37 beers plus others and this has given me a total 114 rates from Brussels Central region and put me in 31st spot for my 20 points !
The Brussels Capital Region is my lowest scoring Province (only 21), even though I have stayed in the city on at least 6 occasions since actually rating.
I have reviewed 17 different places in Brussels, but obviously not drank much ‘local’ stuff (not a big fan of sour beers like Cantillon).
There are some new-ish breweries who do mostly modern stuff like: L’Ermitage, Brussels Beer Project, De La Senne, Beerstorming, No Science etc. At least a couple of them have really easy to access brewpubs / bars (like Brussels Beer Project, L’Ermitage). So I think once the COVID madness is over, you should consider another visit
I have visited every year (except 2020 ofc) starting from 2016 around BXL beer festival time. Not a huge fan of the city itself, but I have always enjoyed the visits.
@martjoobolut, I struggled with Brussels as a city at first, but once I got (on my third visit) a decent map showing the transport system and another with various themed walks, they changed my prospective of it.
I have not been for a number of years now, 2010 maybe. Brugge has taken over completely for our Belgian visits, along with the coastal tram route.
