BEERS: Issues Reporting - Please Post Here for modifications

I don’t even get there…especially when a Pale Ale contain a mix of US / NZ hops…
It was probably a bad Idea from the start to “nationalize” some beer styles.
Basically, for most styles, American was for hoppier/ more bitter… and English more balanced with noble hops and sometime more with a maltier side…then came the Fruity-centric hops that ruined everything :stuck_out_tongue:

That was certainly the intention. Somewhat amusingly, I originally proposed its introduction to house lots of NZ brewed pale ales, which sat midway between APA and EPA but also off to the side a little due to a very distinct hop character. As the NZ admin, I wanted somewhere to put them that said they were the same kinda thing but not quite. I didn’t think people would go for Pale Ale - Australia / NZ so I suggested a catch all. Then Pale Ale - Australia / NZ was arbitrarily added by somebody without consulting anybody else involved in the new style process and now Pale Ale only encompasses a smaller subset of weird pale ales, like German Pale Ales and Polish Pale Ales.

It’s not just the hops, I guess was, presumably my, point, though the hops are a big factor. Pale Ale - Australia / NZ should be less hop forward and much less bitter than Pale Ale - American, but still have distinct Southern Hemisphere hop character that separates them from Pale Ale - English. It should be made with a fairly simple malt bill and a clean ale yeast with at most medium levels of dry hopping, i.e. no haze bombs allowed.

As a side note to that: Regardless of the origin of the hops, hazy pale ales should go under Pale Ale - Hazy / New England which doesn’t exist because I was outvoted since ‘there aren’t very many of those’. Feel free to tag them as ‘hazy pale ale’ so that they can be easily moved if that style does come into existence.

Funnily enough that’s exactly the sort of examples I came across and why I was asking. So should I post links here to stuff like that for you guys to change? I have a “Bulgarian Pale Ale” and an “Irish Pale Ale” among others.

That makes sense, thanks for clarifying. For what it’s worth, the Gloucester and Howling Hops beers I suggested definitely fit your definition, the other 2 I think should too… maybe debatable.
Although hazy in appearance none are what I would consider a “haze bomb”. Unlike say one of Cloudwater’s pale ales from a few years ago, they were using distinctively southern hemisphere hops so flavour was different to “American” ones, but iirc they used a “New England” yeast and it turned out as you’d expect, a haze bomb much closer to a NEIPA than anything else.

This is probably a lengthy discussion for another topic so I’ll leave this as rhetorical… but this annoys and baffles me because NE Pale Ales are such a common style among craft brewers in the UK and presumably the US, way more examples of these than some of the other styles that got added. How many do we need until there’s “enough”? Also they’re literally marketed as NE Pale Ales, I’m not simply referring to any pale ale that’s hazy, even though those can easily be argued to be NE Pales too. It’s a well established style at this point.

This seems to belong in flavoured stout.

Luke Robertson’s take on the Australian Pale Ale question is good (although I pointed out on twitter that the pics in the article are of Coopers Green but Stallward refers to Coopers Red (Sparkling Ale) as the essence of the style (yeasty with prominent fruity esters). It’s listed as Blonde/ Golden here. FWIW I think the dual style definitions are confusing and unhelpful and we’d be better off without the style.

I am just about to drink the Belgica Beer I raised in an earlier post and I see it’s still down as being brewed for a Dutch brewery called Belgica. However if you go to the website (www.belgica-beer.be) the Pdfs actually state that Hoppa Belgium above the web address.

In my opinion this one

https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/northern-monk-donzoko-patrons-project-19-03-reducer/814443/

would better fit into the Pale Lager - India/Hoppy category than into classic Pilsener.

Classic Australian Pale Ale (aka Sparkling Ale) is totally not the same thing that the Australian /NZ Pale Ale. One have its distinctive flavour coming from the fruity ester of the yeast and malt, the other from the fruity newer hop varieties. I agree the names can get confusing, especially when none of the styles definition were updated…

missing the rest of the sentence:

Description here is fine but the hops are missing, it said “laced with Citra, Sabro & Strata” somewhere. Probably just append it to the end.

Just spotted a stray Saison - Flavored:

https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/beer52-irish-wild-honey-saison/596356/41417

This is an old brown ale in the style of a Saison so should arguably be Dark?

I presume a Saison brewed with spices is just a Saison?
