Thursday 16th December and my first non-alcoholic day since arriving on the Sunday 5th.
Grand total now sits at 48 new beers, 21 of which are from California, 10 from other States, 12 from Germany (Costco Advent Calendar) and 1 each from Canada and Mexico. A mini session in the place below and a trip to a ‘Total Wine & More’ store helping to keep the ball rolling. https://www.ratebeer.com/p/laguna-beach-taproom-kitchen/85279/
South American stores in Southern California that lie on their web pages about what beers they stock.
I’ve just had a wasted journey to one such place that claimed it sold a selection of Argentinian, Bolivian, Brazilian, Guatemalan, Honduran, Mexican and Peruvian beers. What a ‘Crock of Shit’ I found.
I have however bought my first Mexican Lager mixed with Tomato Juice (https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/modelo-especial-chelada/231609/); what happens if I actually like it? There are loads of the bloody things around here, all in sodding great big tins (24 Fl Oz). I could well burst onto the leader board for Mexican beer raters, that’s what!
58 new beers and 1 new cider so far; 1 day without any alcohol.
43 American rates, 26 of which are Californian, 13 other States also taken so far. The remaining 16 rates are from the Costco Advent Calendar, plus a couple of Canadian brews and 2 Mexican (including a new region; Baja California Sur).
Not drinking out much, as it’s difficult with a one year old in tow and all the baggage that entails, however as well as a trip to Total Wines and More I have managed to stock up here too: https://www.ratebeer.com/p/hi-time-wine-cellars-costa-mesa/227/
I now have a heavy cold (no I’ve tested OK, it’s not Covid) and feeling sorry for myself, so the various beers I’ve lined up will have to wait a while before I attack them (got a new Japanese Region, Yamaguchi). I always hit the foreign beer shelves when I visit the alcohol hypermarkets they have over here; might be a bit naughty when there so many excellent local beers to try, but I just love finding random beers while in the US. https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/persha-andriyivskyi-el-ukrainian-golden-ale/380442/ https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/chisinau-blonda/11632/
Just passed my 1,000th Californian rate (39 since arriving on this trip), I am averaging nearly four new beers a day, having consumed 87 new rates already.
Grand total so far is 63 American rates, 24 rates from 6 other countries (two new regions). Still only one non-alcohol day since arriving, today may be the second. I have over 20 new rates in the fridge and hope to visit some more brewery taps and bars very soon, so although I should give my body a break it’s difficult with such a huge selection of places to seek out.
I have tried to add a place and a brewery since I came, but I’ve been unable to get passed the Ratebeer blocking system that seems to be in place, telling me I am not worthy of the privilege. Very annoying.
Still drinking along, but slowing down a little. Only had two days without alcohol since being here, that needs to be more and will be after next weekend.
117 new beers tried so far and 3 ciders (in 30 days), that’s an average of four rates a day. 94 are American (67 of which are Californian).
No, not yet Colin, but there is a bar that I am hoping to hit that has one on at the moment: The Brewhouse (San Juan Capistrano) has a Yorkshire Square ‘Early Doors’ on hand-pull. http://yorkshiresquarebrewery.com/
Went to O’Shea’s Taproom on Sunday, only 16 taps, but all new to me.
I really fancied it, but at $7.50 for a 5oz pour, I thought it a bit ‘heavy’. Wish I’d bitten the bullet and tried it now you’ve said it’s a that good. Bugger!
I bought a couple of bottles of Sake today, both small and fairly cheap. On checking back at my daughters they come from Japanese regions I already have ‘a tick’ for. Not checked to see if they are a new grade/style though, hope so. I also bought two Japanese beers and they are from a new region to me, so not all bad.
This style and region ticking game can be hard work you know.
Just about to set off into the wilderness for a long weekend up in the Jochua Tree National Park, will report back on Monday if I survive the hiking and fresh air!
