Just to wrap this up.
American Embassy sent us a very polite email telling us we were not being allowed to travel direct. Sadly it came some 12 days after our flight date. Four hours after the email arrived our Granddaughter was born (the reason we wanted to be in California).
Travel restrictions had changed since we first looked at Mexico and our new ‘country of choice’ for 14 days outside the UK was Turkey and a direct flight from Istanbul to Los Angeles.
To cut a long story short: we didn’t travel and we still haven’t, our daughter and family are all well, so are my wife and I.
We will now wait until everything calms down and see when it’s safe to fly.
