Proper Virtual Bar on Friday 11th September 2020

We’ve not had one for a while and as I will be dog sitting with the wife out at a friends garden party in the evening I thought I’d instigate one.

Usual informal rules, drink what you want, talk about what you want and enjoy yourself while drinking/rating with me and whoever else turns up.

We used to get over 100 posts during these evenings, lets try and get to 30 this time!

Friday is probably the day I’m going to Shrewsbury for their Support Pubs event …

Not sure what my schedule is at the moment… oh what am I talking about? Of course I’ll pop my head around and see what’s going on!

I should be home that night, will stop by and say hello if my brain remembers after a little Shrewsbury CAMRA walkabout the day before

I had two events in my diary for this year and Idlewild have postponed their tour. The virtual bar doesn’t clash with the remaining one so go on then.

Should be around, I’ll definitely pop in for a glass of something (almost certainly from Beer52, which seems to have become my main source for the far fewer beers I’m having whilst homeworking).

It’s the 3rd round of the Speedway GP on Friday. A few of us will be getting together (socially distanced naturally) to watch it on TV and these beers will be shared as the meeting progresses. I may post more on the night between races…

My selection will not be as impressive as that, but it’ll only be me, sharing with no one else. Most likely be a random rating night with whatever has the shortest date left in my stash that isn’t too strong. I have about 20 that need drinking before December, so I will choose from those.

With the new ‘socialising rules’ in England (no more than 6 from next Monday), this sort of gathering might become the way forward very soon.

Is it a new rule? I thought it was already what the govt were telling people to do (I.e. pubs have already been limiting tables to six people) only they’ve now confused the matter by legislating it.

Leicester peeps are still not allowed to socialise outside their own household. So no change for us.

It’s just got worse for me.

My wife’s social on Friday has been cancelled. It was all health professionals having a meal in a large house together, they have decided to lead by example, even though the new rules don’t become law until Monday.

This means I will not be alone in the virtual bar anymore, which will impact on my drinking and eating. She’ll want to share beers, have an input on the choices and alter what food I intended to eat.

I should be in the bar at around 18:00, feel free to start earlier if you wish, I think @Martinsh is hitting the beer around lunchtime; let us all know what you found in Shrewsbury please Martin.

Sounds good. I shall call my kids after I finish work and then I’m good to go. I’ve got five beers in the fridge, doubt I’ll get through more than two or three of them (even sharing with the missus) as lockdown has absolutely destroyed my tolerance.

The outside ‘festival’ bar at The Prince of Wales in Shrewsbury has 6 beers on offer:

Bristol Beer Factory Simplicity
Clun Social Bubble
Hobsons Shropstar
Harbour Gull Rock
North Riding Pistachio Porter
Mallinsons Ella Centennial

Love that plaice, but it’s such a long walk from the station, so rarely go. Used to deliver beers there years ago when I helped out at the now closed Dickensian/Shropshire Legends/Target brewery at Roden.

Just got back in from a five mile walk with the dog and thought I might check the stock for tonight’s virtual bar.

Sadly I have report I have opened a bottle and stolen a piece of my sons pizza!

It’s refreshing and thirst quenching, like it.

Nice start. Personally I am a fan of starting off a Friday session with something “easy” like a lager.

I need to re-rate this one at some point because I found it to be pretty bad, yet I quite enjoyed the non-draught version of Ekstra. A bad bottle, perhaps.

Just heard a loud ‘thud’ in the bar and found this on the floor, it’s leather strap having snapped after taking the weight for a number of years, nothing else broken though.

Yes, my tolerance has definitely reduced. But as I am buying more beer I really need to work on drinking more!
