FAO UK Admins - Breweries/Places Housekeeping

Huh.

I’m guessing it has something to do with the hyphen. But it doesn’t seem to affect everywhere with a hyphen so, perhaps (as with the apostrophe) there’s a “wrong type of hyphen” issue. Also, the (incomplete) attempt to regionalise Wales by putting the region in the city field may be screwing up Google maps - it’s easily confused in my experience if the address isn’t in quite the form it expects it to be. Witness the brewer mapping - for which the co-ordinates cannot be adjusted manually - for evidence of that.

If it is a hyphen issue which has been fixed, it may not be retrospective so the fix doesn’t take effect until the place is edited. We’ve had that sort of thing with fixes before and it can lead to some head scratching as to why the problem persists in some instances but not others.

this is a bottle shop, not a bar.

Minor correction: I added this last week and just realised I accidentally selected beer shop rather than internet-based online only.

Not been there for 10 years +, but for the completeness’ sake, the Lloyds Bar in Basingrad is now a Spoons and has been renamed The Angel. Although I am apparently being taken there in a couple of weeks as part of a pre-gig mini-crawl*.

*Or as it’s know in Basingrad, a massive pub crawl.

PS - 4-3 to the Farnborough, 4-3 to the Farnborough…

I suspect that this is a general issue for places, at least on my two Android devices, but if you click on a hyphenated suburb, it shows no places. I.e. Southampton - Shirley. Basically if I click on any of the hyphenated Hampshire locations they’re blank. Same for Surrey.

Dan’s Brewery in Manchester has been renamed Wander Beyond to give the beers a wider appeal. Wander Beyond already exists in RB so they probably need to be merged.

Just read that the Three Counties Cider Shop in Ledbury, Herefordshire is closing this month though they will continue to have an online presence.

Also should we not consider closing Beer Revolution as its location on here is incorrect and create a new place for it. It moved almost a year ago now from the castle area site to a much bigger venue in town at 7 Market Street, Hay on Wye, HR3 5AF. Looking at the ratings it would just mean that Matt’s review definitely needs to be dragged over to the new premises, LazyPyro (Chris’s} could also, however his review really focuses more on the online presence. But certainly need to close off the old venue and add again as a new site/place I reckon.

Yep.

Minor correction completed.

Now renamed. Hope you enjoy the crawl, the ratings for this particular Spoons aren’t too promising. Just noticed that WhatPub are suffixing Spoons with JDW, where we lead!

Yes it’s a real bugger, it’s been like this for a while. I corrected the Wales stuff earlier but just finding these is so difficult. I hate being critical of Ratebeer, I’d rather be constructive but this really is shooting ourselves in the foot.

Good spot Paul. Tidied up now but please take a look to see if there are any errors.

Congratulations on your 11,000 beer ratings by the way.

Hi Fin. Part one of this now changed to On-Line.

Hmmm part 2, Beer Revolution, if you add the new place I will shut down the old, I can also move reviews that refer to the new place over. Cheers Glen.

thanks. Will have a ganders. The ‘Dan’s’ name was still in use last month so not sure if they are planning to ditch it completely for the new name or keep both.

I thought I’d read about the issue on here somewhere.

Just tried to add places in Southsea and Tilford (Farnham), but both hyphenated so wouldn’t let me do it. Although I do wonder if some of these locations should just be added on a standalone basis.

Couple of amendments for Chelmsford places please.

The Essex Cider Shop is now closed for good.

And Barista needs a street number added to Duke Street (44-45) as it’s not showing on the map correctly.

Cheers

Can I suggest adding ‘and Taproom’ to the name. Also hours are 12:00-20:00, Fri and Sat.

This is a perennial problem.

Every address in the UK has a “post town”. In the case of Southsea and Tilford, that would be Portsmouth and Farnham - presumably, I haven’t checked it out. Strictly, all that’s required for addressing a letter is the street addtess, the post town and the full postcode (note that counties are no longer included in the postal address and the postal system pays no heed to county boundaries). The village or district in urban areas may be included. Or it may not. I think they are referred to as “helper locations”, or some such, in postal parlance. Many cities are not divided up into districts - no addresses with London postcodes, for instance, have “helper locations” included.

So, to have Southsea or Tilford as distinct places you’d have to put that into the “city” field and exclude the post towns Portsmouth & Farnham. Whether it’s better to separate out small villages or include them under the post town depends on your perspective. But, if you do list them separately, that means departing from the official postal address, which can have adverse consequences. Such as screwing up the mapping. The vagaries of the Google mapping service accentuate this. And, like many things with Google, it’s almost impossible for outsiders to divine exactly how it works.

There’s no easy solution. Or any solution that I’ve been able to come up with.

I think this entry https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/beername/473541/ needs a split between the cask and bottled versions.
