Battledown have been updating various old recipes and then rebranding as new beers but keeping the old names. Some of the old ones need editing.

https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/battledown-tipster/69868/
This one’s already retired but ABV should have been 4% and also rename to Battledown Tipster (-2018) to clarify it from the new one I’ve just added, as they’ve just relaunched as a “West Coast Session IPA” so it’s a substantial difference, but they’ve kept this name from the beer it was based on.

https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/battledown-black/250815/
Recipe was “revised” in October 2019. On Untappd the brewery renamed the old one back to “Cheltenham SPA Black” (what it was called prior to the rebrand) and retired it, and a new entry was created for this revised one in November. No idea if it was a substantial enough change to warrant any messing about on RB but they have at least dropped the “Russian Imperial Stout” label and perhaps more sensibly called it an Export Stout now, so maybe a style change is due.

Just called “Battledown Porter” since the rebrand. Can be unretired as they are brewing it again with a “sweeter yeast” now. Doubt that’s enough to warrant a new beer.

https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/battledown-nutcracker/298530/
Xmas seasonal from years ago, can retire.

https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/battledown-4-kings/85242/
Written as “Four Kings” now rather than the number, and has been for a few years afaik.
As for style, barleywine??? I’ve not tasted it so I can’t say for sure but I couldn’t find anything referring to it as such. It had “Strong Ale” on the old pump clips and while the new clip doesn’t include style, the description just calls it a “big Extra Special Bitter”. Given its strength being rather high for an ESB surely Strong Ale - English is the better style choice for this beer? It was literally called this before.

I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while now but how do we want to handle LHG Brewpub’s beers? They’re currently being added under Left Handed Giant (the brewery) even though they’re not brewed there.

Just over a month or so ago on Untappd they made a separate brewery page for the brewpub and requested we move over all the LHG Brewpub beers from the main LHG page. All were exclusively brewed and available at the brewpub, but now (as of tomorrow) they’re also selling a canned “core range” so it seems to make some sense why they wanted them separate, the branding on the cans is “LHG Brewpub” rather than “LHG”.

So is there any interest in doing the same thing here on RB? Adding “LHG Brewpub” as a brewery and moving the relevant beers over? Or do we keep using “Left Handed Giant” but maybe rename the brewpub beers to make it clear they’re different from the main brand? Or nobody cares and just continue adding them as normal LHG beers?

There’s precedent here. It should be added as a new brewery. The only issue has been those brewpubs where some beers are actually also brewed at other locations and it’s not always easy to identify where the beers were really brewed (ie my Brewhouse & Kitchen Southampton tick which turned out to have been brewed at their Chester branch). However it it’s clear which are which then it looks straightforward.

I agree, I was thinking of BrewDog’s Outpost bars when I wrote this post and we have them as separate breweries on RB.

Forgot to attach a pic of the cans

As you can see I think the LHG Brewpub logo being in the centre with the beer name in a big bold font underneath is distinctive enough from their main beers which are all about the artwork and only say the name on the back of the label. For the canned stuff it should be instantly clear where it’s from. Stuff on keg there may be more ambiguous.

If an admin agrees it should be added as a new brewery I’ll grab a list of beers that will need to be moved. With the exception of Sky Above, all are brewpub exclusive. I guess Sky Above should be moved as well as they don’t seem to have brewed it at the actual brewery for quite some time now, and description states it’s their house beer. I believe it to be exactly the same beer, even the hops are the same as the old one.

The split out of Brewery vs Brew Pub is also the case for To Øl and To Øl CHP. Again it’s not always clear which is which but generally works ok.

Kash / Brew 22 in Frodsham is now called Paddy’s. Unfortunately closed when I went past.

I’d say split them … send a list here and I’ll sort it out.

Keep an eye on new beers being added as some bars (outside of Bristol … and probably in Bristol too!) are bound to mix the two up!

Ok so here’s where it gets trickier …
I looked up one of the beers you posted an image of …

https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/left-handed-giant-sky-above/573299/

First rated in Dec '17 so presumably before any notion of a brewpub set up.

Any crossover beers brewed first at the original brewery are probably best left in the original brewery listing unless any evidence of revised recipes can be offered.

Hoping there’s not gonna be too many of these !

That was the one exception I noted in my previous post, and I believe it’s the only one. So far.

I agree with leaving them under LHG, but that one is a little tricky as it has since become the “house beer” at the brewpub. I really don’t know what the best thing to do with it is. Probably add it under the brewpub but alias it to the brewery one. And update the description to explain what’s up with it (I’ll post this, as well as a list of beers to move, later this evening)

All Nations Brewpub “established 2019” ?!?! Aw come on. Established 1795 as per the brewery detailed info. Also the statement “beer is nowadays mostly brewed at Broughs” cannot be correct, as Broughs are no longer in business. What I believe to be the situation is that Andy Brough (nowadays head brewery at Izaak Walton) is the brewer here as well.

Right then first things first a bit of admin. Please add the logo to the brewpub:
https://www.ratebeer.com/brewers/lhg-brewpub/42809/ here’s a high res logo.

Associating the place with the brewpub rather than the brewery would make more sense I think. Or can you associate with both? That would be ideal.

Now I’ve added Sky Above to the Brewpub and I suggest aliasing this to the brewery version as I don’t believe there’s been a recipe change but folks searching “lhg brewpub sky above” or browsing their list of beers will at least find it this way. I found a description of the original beer and it sounds very similar, only thing is ABV is now 4.5% which is a very minor.

So… https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/lhg-brewpub-sky-above/818548/ alias to https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/left-handed-giant-sky-above/573299/
change ABV to 4.5% and give it this description (first sentence I wrote myself for clarification, remove or reword as you see fit)

Now the list of beers that need to be moved over. Don’t know if you want to rename “Left Handed Giant” to “LHG Brewpub” in the names, or maybe even just LHG. Not sure how best to make the difference clear.

There’s about 20 more but they never got added to RB and not much point adding them now.
Just FYI, LHG are very proactive in managing their brewery and brewpub pages on Untappd now. If there’s any doubt with new beers being added I’d have a quick check there. If you see the beer added to the brewpub and they’ve added the brewpub logo to it (or an actual label) then safe to assume that’s where it should be as they’ll have most likely edited it themselves.

@LazyPyro

I’ve actioned the first part of your BM.

Just need to copy the 15 across when I get a mo.

Will call them “LHG Brewpub” xxx for clarity.

Is the brewing back on at All Nations? Not been for a while but certainly had stopped a while ago. It’s not the original kit and hasn’t been continuously brewing since 1795 as far as I know.

Will amend if you can provide some more details

No idea. I’ve never been. My info based on report in Beer at Heart (Stafford CAMRA magazine), but the “brewed at Broughs” bit is obviously wrong !

I think you should add the new Deya Taproom as there is probably enough to distinguish one from the other.

Will do, but I’ll wait until it actually opens. The opening originally scheduled for the 27th has just been Corona’d today. Could be postponed for many months.

Oldershaw Brewery is now calling itself Zest.

I would regard this as a name change as they are brewing (some of) the same beers, in the same premises, and in the same (ultimate) ownership. Further details here

Putting my rating of Heavenly Blonde under Oldershaw anyway

Kraftworks in Alsager is now called “Bar”. Now have 8 taps

Now updated, agree just a name change. I have sent off the new logo, hopefully gets updated soon on here. The new website is very bright, migraine warning.

Now updated, I have added the town into the name to enable searches.
